How to Start Therapy in Ontario

Starting therapy can feel like a big step—but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Whether you’re brand new to the idea or returning after a break, here’s a step-by-step guide to get started with confidence.

Step 1: Get Clear on What You’re Looking For

Ask yourself:

  • What am I hoping to explore or work on?
  • Do I prefer online or in-person sessions?
  • Would I like short-term or long-term support?

Step 2: Choose a Qualified Therapist

In Ontario, therapists are typically registered with a regulatory body such as the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Choosing a registered professional helps ensure ethical, safe, and accountable care.

Look for a therapist who specializes in the area you’d like support in, whether that’s anxiety, trauma, identity work, or relationship dynamics.

Step 3: Book a Free Consultation

Most therapists (including us!) offer a free initial consultation. This is a no-pressure conversation where you can:

  • Ask questions about their approach
  • Discuss your goals or concerns
  • Get a feel for the fit

At OntarioTherapy.org, we believe that therapy is most effective when there’s a good client-therapist connection. If we’re not the right fit—or your needs are beyond our scope—we’ll tell you honestly and offer a referral whenever possible.
