How to Find the Right Therapist for You

Finding the right therapist is like finding the right pair of shoes—fit matters. Therapy works best when you feel safe, seen, and understood. Here’s how to choose someone who aligns with your needs and goals.

What to Look For in a Therapist

  • Credentials: Are they registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or a similar governing body?
  • Specializations: Do they work with your area of concern (e.g., grief, trauma, ADHD, relationship issues)?
  • Therapy Style: Do you prefer structured, goal-oriented work or open, exploratory conversation?
  • Personality Fit: Do you feel comfortable talking to them? Do they listen without judgment?

Questions to Ask in Your First Session:

  • What does a typical session look like with you?
  • How do you usually work with clients like me?
  • What therapeutic approaches do you use?

At Ontario Therapy, we know that fit is everything. If we’re not the right fit to help you, we promise to let you know—gently and honestly—and we’ll even provide referral options when we can.
