What is the Point of Therapy?

People often ask, “What’s the point of therapy?” Or, more commonly, “When will I know I’m fixed?”

Well, aside from the fact that no one is broken—and that therapists are not here to “fix” anyone—these questions reveal a deep and understandable desire: to feel better, to make sense of our experiences, and to gain clarity in moments of emotional overwhelm.

At Ontario Therapy, we often remind clients that therapy isn’t about fixing—it’s about healing, growth, and emotional insight. There are many reasons why someone might start psychotherapy. Some begin therapy because a loved one encouraged them to. Others come during times of stress, anxiety, grief, or personal crisis. Many want to improve their relationships, build better coping skills, or understand long-standing emotional patterns.

If you ask my toddler what therapy is for, the answer is perfectly simple: “To learn how to feel our feelings.” And that’s more accurate than you might think.

Common Reasons People Seek Therapy

      • To manage anxiety and stress

      • To process grief or loss

      • To navigate relationship challenges

      • To build emotional resilience

      • To explore trauma or past experiences

      • To develop healthy coping strategies

The True Purpose of Therapy: Emotional Maturity

One of my favourite perspectives comes from Sigmund Freud—yes, that Freud. While he may be a complicated figure in the history of psychology, he offered a simple and powerful idea: the goal of therapy is to help us become emotionally mature.

Emotional maturity includes the ability to be:

        • Independent – Making choices aligned with your values and trusting yourself.

        • Dependent – Recognizing that it’s okay (and necessary) to rely on others for support.

        • Interdependent – Building relationships based on mutual respect, healthy boundaries, and trust.

In therapy, we explore where one would fall on this spectrum and work toward balance and fluidity. You might have been raised to believe that needing others is a weakness, or that emotions should be suppressed. Perhaps you have learned that the only person you can rely on is yourself. Therapy offers a space to unlearn those patterns, to reconnect with your emotional world, and to discover new ways of being.

So, What’s the Point of Therapy?

          • To understand yourself more deeply

          • To process difficult emotions with support

          • To improve your relationships with others—and with yourself

          • To build emotional strength and flexibility

          • To move toward healing, clarity, and self-compassion

Therapy is not a quick fix. It’s a process of becoming—of growing into your most authentic, grounded, and emotionally aware self.
